How many Km's do my runners last?

How long should you runners last you, or how often should you switch to a new pair of runners. Whilst there is a degree of personal preference, it is a generally accepted rule that the cushioning in the midsole breaks down after around 500 - 800km or slightly less in lighter shoes. Heavier runners or those running exclusively on hard concrete can also take off a few Km as they will wear through them quicker.

In our last article we spoke about the benefits of alternating your shoes to not only utilise the right shoe for the right session but also to prolong the life of each shoe. After the midsole starts to breakdown your shoes become less cushioned putting more force through the joints which can ultimately lead to injury. The shoes will begin to feel "dead" as they provide less and less cushion for each step. Once your runners reach this stage it is time to get a new pair.

Keeping track of the milage completed in each shoe is a great way to gauge when you should change your shoes, alternatively a good rule of thumb is for each day you run you should change your shoes at least that many times per year, ie if you run twice a week you should change your shoes at least twice per year.
